What green building rating systems earn points in STARS?

The STARS Buildings credits recognize green building codes, policies, and rating systems. Maximum points are reserved for the highest achievable third party certifications (e.g., LEED Platinum), but incremental points are also awarded for building space that meets other standards.

Building Design and Construction (D+C)
This credit includes buildings that have been constructed or undergone major renovations during the previous five years.

What qualifies?
Newly constructed/renovated building space that is third party certified under a green building rating system focused on design and construction that is administered by an Established Green Building Council. Examples include:

D+C rating systems that are not administered by an Established Green Building Council (e.g., Green Globes NC), and green building codes and programs that do not involve certification may also be reported, but are weighted less heavily for scoring purposes.

Building Operations and Maintenance (O+M)
This credit includes existing buildings that have not been constructed or undergone major renovations during the previous five years. Therefore, green building codes and rating systems focused on design and construction do not apply.

What qualifies?
Existing building space that is third party certified under a green building rating system focused on the operations and maintenance of existing buildings that is administered by an Established Green Building Council. Examples include:
O+M rating systems that are not administered by an Established Green Building Council (e.g., BOMA BEST, ENERGY STAR, Green Globes EB) and sustainable O+M programs that do not involve certification may also be reported, but are weighted less heavily for scoring purposes.

Building space that is certified only under a green building rating system focused on design and construction does not count for this credit.
