When will the next version of STARS be released?

STARS 2.1 was released May 18, 2016. STARS 2.2 is currently under development and slated for release in 2018. Upon release, there will be a year-long transition period during which STARS participants may decide whether to upgrade to the new version or continue reporting under version 2.1.

The revision process is governed by STARS Steering Committee in line with the STARS Technical Development Policy:
  • Administrative Updates (e.g. to clarify credit criteria and correct typos) are released no more often than quarterly.
  • Substantive Changes (e.g. 2.1, 2.2) are released as necessary, but no more frequently than once per year.
  • Major Revisions (e.g. 3.0, 4.0) are released as necessary, but no more frequently than once every two years.
Given that there was a two year development period before STARS 2.0 was released, STARS 3.0 is not expected before 2020.
